Enjoy Learning about Nature? Become a Master Naturalist!

If you enjoy exploring nature and are curious about the state's geology, animal life, plants, ecology, water and history, then this program is for you. Any adult who is curious and enjoys learning about the natural world, shares that knowledge with others and supports conservation can be a Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer. 

North St. Paul is the host site for an up-coming series of Big Woods Big River classes for people interested in becoming certified as a Master Naturalist. The course starts in February 2017 and will be held at the new Casey Lake Park building in North St. Paul.

The mission of the Minnesota Master Naturalist Program is to promote awareness, understanding and stewardship of Minnesota's natural environment by developing a corps of well-informed citizens dedicated to conservation education and service within their communities


Each course focuses on one of Minnesota’s three major biomes:
Big Woods, Big River, Prairie and Potholes, and Northwoods, Great Lakes.

The Minnesota Master Naturalist Program is a joint effort of the University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In 2012 North St. Paul hosted the 100th course offered by the Master Naturalist program which began in Minnesota in 2005. Since then, North St. Paul has hosted three of these series of classes.

This year's course in North St. Paul includes hands-on classroom activities and two required field trips on Saturday, April 1, and Saturday, April 29, from 8-5 each day. Attendance at all sessions is required. Classes will be held in the new park building at Casey Lake at 2039 17th Avenue East in North St. Paul.

Cathy Troendle has been a very active Master Naturalist
leader in Southwood Nature Preserve since 2007.

 
Cathy Troendle’s lifelong passion for nature and working with young people converged in the Master Naturalist Program. Since 2007, Cathy has developed classroom and outdoor programming for grade school students, field days for middle school students, recruited high school students to assist in invasive plant removal in Southwood Nature Preserve, and developed an educational Prairie Days Event for the general public. She has been actively managing a woodland trail restoration, as well as an acre of prairie restoration in Southwood Nature Preserve.

Participants will work together in groups to complete capstone projects within North Saint Paul once the training is completed.

North St. Paul has been actively managing natural resources in the city including shoreline restoration projects at Silver Lake, the installation of curb-cut rain gardens, the creation of an infiltration pond at Silver Lake and the restoration of 28 acres at Southwood Nature Preserve including woodland, prairie, oak savanna and wetlands.

Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District will host one of the field trips for the course. Watershed staff will provide content assistance for several of the classes. RWMWD has been providing support for North St. Paul for many years to improve the water quality at Casey Lake through the removal of carp and the stocking of bluegill, shoreline restoration plantings, aquatic plant management and the building of neighborhood rain gardens in the Casey Lake neighborhood.

The course cost is $275 and includes course materials and supplies. If you are a North St. Paul resident, this cost will be reimbursed once you have completed all coursework and forty hours service to North St. Paul. If the course cost is a hardship for participants, please fill out and submit the scholarship application.

Hometown Habitat, Stories of Bringing Nature Home

Wild Ones Big River Big Woods, in partnership with Wild Ones Twin Cities and Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District, will screen Hometown Habitat, Stories of Bringing Nature Home, a 90-minute environmental, education documentary focused on showing how and why native plants are critical to the survival and vitality of local ecosystems.

Dr. Douglas Tallamy, whose research, books and lectures on the use of non-native plants in landscaping, sound the alarm about habitat and species loss.

Tallamy provides the narrative thread that challenges the notion that humans are here and nature is someplace else. “It doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t be that way.” Inspiring stories of community commitment to conservation landscaping illustrate Tallamy’s vision by showing how humans and nature can co-exist with mutual benefits.

The message: “We can change the notion that humans are here and nature is some place else. It doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t be that way.” Each individual has the power to conserve resources, restore habitat for wildlife and bring beauty to their patch of earth.

The goal: Build a new army of habitat heroes!

The Fabulous Phalen Corridor

Ah, how times have changed. The days of vast stretches of eroding lakeshore, weedy reed canary grass thickets and noxious buckthorn and smooth brome slopes have fallen by the wayside. Over the last fifteen years, the Watershed and numerous public and private partners have succeeded in restoring over forty acres of critical parkland area in the Phalen Chain of Lakes corridor. And the great news; there is still much more ecological restoration on the horizon!




This year we will be focusing our restoration efforts on a stretch of Keller Creek just south of the lake and north of Frost Avenue (see Section B below). We completed the first area (Section A on map) last spring and will be finishing Sections C and D in subsequent years. This is a cooperative project with Ramsey County and the DNR.

Last fall we got a jumpstart by removing a good portion of the buckthorn in the creek buffer area. A Conservation Corps Minnesota crew (employed by the county) conducted the majority of this very labor-intensive work.

Ramsey County Correction inmate crews hauled the material off site. This really helped us get an early start on the site preparation component of the project.

is now cleared and will be ready for prairie seeding next summer.

More site preparation work will take place this spring and planting with many local school classes and adult volunteers will happen in May.

They will be used along the creek edge next spring to protect
 emergent plants like bulrush and burreed.

Mike Goodnature, Ramsey County’s Natural Resources Specialist, recently received word that the county has been awarded a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant for the “Keller Lake Savanna and Woodland Project.”

The project centers on a twenty-acre Ramsey County parcel directly to the west of Keller Creek and south of the lake (see red area on map below). This parcel is an essential component in restoring and connecting natural areas in the Phalen Corridor. Located in the southwest corner of Keller Regional Park, this oak forest/savanna has been set aside for wildlife habitat.




Although currently degraded by invasive species (e.g., buckthorn and smooth brome), this area is the largest tract of forest within the Phalen Corridor. After restoration, this parcel will become a prime refuge for migratory waterfowl. songbirds, amphibians and other species. Planning and site preparation work will happen this spring. The bulk of the native plant establishment will take place in 2017-18.

The Watershed District is very excited to have an opportunity to work with the County on this project. Cumulatively, our efforts are coming together to make Phalen one of the highest quality urban lake corridors in the Twin Cities area.

Rebuilding “Memory Lane” – 2015 Keller Creek Restoration

Reflections along the banks of Keller Creek

When you descend the hill to Keller Creek from the Golfview Picnic access parking lot a view of something more remarkable than a golf course appears. All along the edge of this rambling creek is a panoramic “canvas” about to be transformed into a masterpiece.

By next summer the vibrant wildflowers, butterfly milkweed, blue eyed grass, prairie smoke, Midland shooting star, spiderwort and aromatic aster should be coming into their prime.
 
Rattlesnake master and native grasses, little bluestem, prairie dropseed and side oats grama will be dancing in the breeze along the upper banks.
 
Below the prairie, the wet meadow plants, cardinal flower, turtlehead, fox sedge and Joe Pyeweed will be calling out to the hummingbirds, monarchs, dragonflies and damselflies to visit their colorful blooms and seed heads.
 
The emergent plants along the water’s edge, with their feet under water and their vegetation looming above the surface, will inspire frogs, herons, egrets and spawning fish to seek out this restored habitat to spend their summers searching for food and raising their young. 

All these habitats are much better homes than the buckthorn and reed canary grass they have replaced, don’t you think?

An Apt Nickname for a Motley Creek

What’s a better nickname than “Memory Lane” for a place that several hundred kids had their first experience restoring a rich habitat of native plants? It seems like an apt epithet for a place that is reclaiming some of the essential qualities of Minnesota’s pre-settlement ecosystems.

I met Ann Nelson, a creek volunteer, at a salon talk I was giving in March about water quality issues. She expressed interest in the project then and came back numerous times to help us work with classrooms that were planting. Here is what she had to say about the experience:
 
"Thank you for presenting information about the Watershed District's work at the salon conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed working with you, your staff and the kids on the planting project. Please keep me in mind for other projects if I can help in any way. Thank you for your good work."
 
That's the kind of affirmation I like to hear!
 
Keller Creek is a place you want to come back to. People have been hiking, biking, paddling, driving, planting, picnicking, practicing archery and fishing along this corridor for generations. A group of inspired women back in the 1920’s nicknamed the grove they planted along its banks, “Memory Grove”. This grove of elms was located next to the spot where we dug our first trowels full of soil to begin the restoration. One lone tall elm tree is what remains below the hill but there is still an stone monument with remnants of a plaque on it that honored their efforts to recreate a forest. The City of Maplewood, with help from the University of Minnesota Forestry, recently did a core boring to count the rings of the tree and determined that it was close to 100 years old and within the age range of a tree that could have been planted during that era.

Each day this spring, as I returned with a new group of students to assist with the restoration, energy was high and people were cheerful and happy to be there. It’s no small task coordinating all the scheduling with teachers, students and Master Gardeners who turn out to help us each year, but there was lots of enthusiasm for participating. I found it meaningful that our first volunteers this spring were three fifth grade classrooms from American Indian Magnet School.

In the early 1800’s the Dakota Tribe from the village of Kaposia would travel along this passageway coming from the Mississippi River through its marshes and wet meadows on their way up north to their summer hunting, fishing and ricing lakes. The Dakota guided their friend, French Canadian voyageur, Ben Gervais, along this creek to find a location to build a mill and farm on the banks of Gervais Lake and Gervais Creek to the north. If you follow the creek through the narrow culvert to the other side of Highway 61, you get to a spot where evidence of the Woodland Period (1000 BCE to 1000 CE) culture was uncovered when the construction of the road was in process in the 1974.This creek has been at the crossroads of a lot of activity for a long, long time!

The creek has gone through many metamorphoses over its lifetime. It has been through-the-ringer, so to speak. It’s been dredged and dammed, armored and paddled. It was high time for some TLC if you ask me. I guess that’s what was the opinion of Bill Bartodziej, our Watershed biologist, when he initiated the restoration project. 
 
From mid-May to early June twelve classrooms from St. Paul, Maplewood and North St. Paul participated in the process of restoring native plants in about a 12,000 square foot area (1/3 of an acre) along the shoreline of Keller Creek.

A restoration project provides much more than your average planting experience for kids. Lessons about water quality issues, ecology, history and watershed geography that are built into classroom experiences prior to planting day culminate in a hands-on project that calls for teamwork, eye-hand coordination, physical effort, dexterity and attention to detail. The rewards are fresh air, a beautiful place to spend a spring morning or afternoon, a chance to interact with nature and do some environmental observations, a sense of accomplishment, an opportunity to make history and some happy memories. What more can you ask for?

David Barrett, aerospace instructor and environmental science teacher at Farnsworth, walked the area in advance of the planting to get his own bearings. He took some time to develop additional activities to complement the planting, hid some geocaches and then invited his long time geocaching buddy to join us on the day of the planting. He is the kind of educator who is committed to building high quality outdoor experiences that enhance skills and connect students to the nuances of a place. Despite the intermittent rain on their planting day, his students and his colleague, Hannah Scanlon’s class used this opportunity to measure the water quality of the stream, identify birds and apply GPS to find the geocaches Barrett hid in various locations.

In early June members of the District’s Citizen Advisory Commission and Landscape Ecology Award Program Team joined forces to lend their hands to the efforts. They made a night of it and filled in plants in the wet meadow zone and explored the newly reconstructed portage.

And Then There’s The Dirty Work……..

I asked Simba Blood, the District’s Natural Resources Technician, to give me a quick low-down on some of the steps that went into getting the area ready for planting. Revisit her article "Connecting the Spots" in the February edition of the Ripple Effect for more details on the overall project. Also, check out "Three Creeks in One" in the April edition to learn more about the history of the creek.

One of the first questions students asked when arriving down at the creek is, “What are those rolls in the water?”

Simba answered,

“In places where we’ve moved soil, we use biologs along the shoreline. These are coconut fiber logs that are sturdy and act as erosion control measures where we have loose soil that could wash into the creek. In areas with cut banks where we didn’t disturb soil, we use brush bundles made from willow and buckthorn rolled up in an erosion blanket. They are cheaper and don’t function as erosion control, but they serve as a flow break in areas where they can buffer and allow some of the soil washing into the stream to accumulate instead of moving downstream.”

“How did you prepare the area before planting?” I inquired.
 
“We treated the weeds and turf with herbicide and did a lot of invasive removal. There was a lot of poison ivy we needed to get rid of and we did some “spiking” of the burdock. We used a special shovel to cut the burdock root a couple inches underground. Before we covered the area with erosion control fabric, Bill seed drilled the planting areas to break up the soil so it would be easier to plant into. While we were out there working on the planting areas for this year, the Youth Outdoors groups assisted us in starting to work on next year’s restoration area on the other side of the creek. They took out 8-10 large garbage bags of garlic mustard. There’s lots more of it though so we will be busy getting that out of there next year.

There is one special part of the project that rises to the top and stands out as a major accomplishment. As any of you may know who have tried to canoe or kayak from Lake Phalen to Keller Lake, the weir in this area of the restoration, up until now, has always presented a major challenge when traveling up or downstream. Prior to the latest renovation, the “portages” next to the weir were very steep and cumbersome to climb with a canoe.

On one of our first days at the creek, I asked Bill to tell me about the efforts of redesigning the portages. I'd missed seeing them be rebuilt, but I knew there had to be a story in it.

I caught up with him on the trail while he was talking to Mike Goodnature, Natural Resources Manager for Ramsey County Parks and Recreation, one of our partners in the project. At the time I was showing Randee Edmundson, a Citizens Advisory Committee member, the newly finished portage to get her nod of approval on the improvements before she headed off to South Africa for six months on a teaching gig. Randee is a veteran canoe guide who leads teams through the Canadian wilderness. I knew she would give me an honest reaction.

Here’s what Bill had to say about the re-creation of the portages.

“The repositioning of the limestone slabs that made up the wall near the dam was very tricky. We had to bury the slabs several feet deep at the portage points in order to make the steps less steep for people carrying canoes and kayaks up and down the portage. Due to some limestone rock fragmentation upon relocation, we came up two rocks short in the southern access point construction. This type of limestone is very difficult to locate and quite expensive.

We urgently called City of St. Paul Staff, and they found two surplus limestone slabs left over from our Phalen restoration project in their yard. But when they tried to lift one, it was too large and heavy and impossible to bring to our site. In the process of trying to lift it, one of the limestone slabs dropped and broke into two pieces that just fit perfectly in the places we needed them. We really appreciate St. Paul’s willingness to donate them to the project. It was a pleasure too to work with Semple Excavating and their veteran operator who provided invaluable expertise with the access point construction.”
 
Needless to say, we were all quite excited about the improvements to the portage and from the evidence we’ve seen of people using it, not only for portaging, but also for fishing, since it’s been completed, the “nods” have it.

Heads Up for Gardeners and Water-loving Friends

Looking for a close-at-hand place to buy native plants for your yard and rain garden?

The Landscape Revival — Native Plant Expo and Market on Saturday, June 6, offers gardeners one convenient location to shop for Minnesota native plants from 12 local native growers and learn how to use the plants from eight conservation organizations. Accessory products such as organic compost, rain barrels and native plant seed will also be for sale.

The goal of the Landscape Revival is to promote the use of native plants by educating the community about their benefits for wildlife habitat, pollinators and water quality. The event is sponsored by Saint Paul Audubon, Capitol Region Watershed District, Wild Ones, Blue Thumb and Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District.

The event is located at the Community Pavilion at the Roseville Cub Foods (formerly Rainbow),1201 Larpenteur Ave. West in Roseville from 9 am-3 pm. Cash and check only.

Many of us don’t think about choosing plants that are native to Minnesota when we plan our gardens. Instead, we pick plants for their color, their hardiness or how quickly they grow. But by choosing Minnesota native plants, plant species that have grown in this area for hundreds of years and are thus well adapted to our conditions, we can create spectacular gardens that are a haven for wildlife and protect our lakes and the Mississippi River.

Every Rain Garden Needs a Little TLC!

Rain gardens needs TLC to remain strong, beautiful and functional.

With winter on the way out and spring quickly heading in, it’s time to start preparing your rain gardens for summer. What exactly does that involve? How can a rain garden be prepared for April showers so that it will display the most beautiful May flowers? Look no further; here is a basic guide to taking care of your rain garden.


Early Spring

As the snow begins to melt, it leaves a path of sediment and debris that must be removed. This list will guide you through some necessary maintenance activities:

Remove sediment from the inlet in spring.
  1. Shovel sediment from inlets, outlets and the bottom of the rain garden.
  2. Remove trash, excessive leaves, grass clippings and other debris.
  3. Clear any blockages to the inlets and outlets in order to allow proper water flow both in and out of the rain garden.
  4. Add mulch as needed to maintain a 3” depth and reduce the need for weeding and watering.
  5. Prune plants, if needed, as they become green.
  6. Leaving some stalks 15 inches or more will provide habitat for nesting pollinators, native bees and other beneficial native insects.
  7. Install new plantings in bare areas if necessary.
  8. Dispose of all accumulated material properly.


Add mulch when needed to maintain a 3" depth.


Late Spring/Summer

As the seasons change, so do the maintenance needs. These tasks can help you keep your rain garden in tip-top shape.

If weeds or invasive plants are present, pull the plants from the roots to prevent them from returning.
  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website is a good resource for identifying common weeds and providing methods to control them.
  • Make a list of the native plants in your rain garden to help distinguish between desired and non-native species.
  • Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District’s Lake Phalen Walking Tour and Plant Guide is another resource and provides a good list of many of the native and
    non-native species that may be in your rain garden. 
Spot treat perennial weeds with an appropriate herbicide if necessary.

If there are areas of bare soil erosion, add 3” of mulch where it has been depleted. Add additional plants if necessary.

In drought conditions, water newly planted rain gardens with 1” of water weekly. Established rain gardens should not need additional water unless plants look distressed.

Continue to clear inlets and outlets of debris, sediment and trash.

If standing water is present for 48 hours or more after a rainfall, it is an indication of a malfunction that will require further study and action. Call your contractor or RWMWD to get advice on how to correct drainage issues.

Rain gardens require maintenance before the snow falls. Here are some ways you can help make your spring cleanup a lot easier.
  • Fall is a good time to prune plants when they have gone dormant. Leaving some plants uncut provides winter cover, bird habitat and visual interest.
  • Fall is a great time for additional necessary plantings.
  • Divide plants that have become too large.
  • Remove excessive leaves from the bottom of the rain garden.
  • Continue to keep debris and sediment from inlets and outlets.


Like any garden, a rain garden requires some love and attention. Hopefully this article will help you maintain a strong, beautiful and functional rain garden.
